Introduction: Patek Philippe 2440J; Massive rectangular shaped case with large flared fluted lugs measuring 28 x 45mm with a silvered white dial, black Roman numbers.  The watch is fitted with a 10''-200 caliber 18-jewel movement # 954226, case# 657088.  The case was made be the master case maker Marc Houriet, with stamp 19.  The watch is further accompanied with its original crown, and crystal. 

Essay: 2440, also known as the "clubs" model, launched in 1946 and was made in yellow and pink gold for a few years.   Patek Philippe ceased production of this model around 1953. This is one of the first large shape watches of a successful series following the war.  Other similar references were  2441, 2442, 2443, 2471, 2472. It is considered one of the rarest shape watches and an iconic piece amongst collectors. The name "clubs" comes from the prominent double drop flat shape lugs, reminiscent of clover leaves, as well as the "club-shaped" hour indexes at 3 and 9 o'clock. Because of its large size it can bear the round caliber 10”-200.  After 1948 for practical reasons the watch was equipped with the 9-90 caliber. The two piece case was made by Marc Houriet a master case maker identified with the Geneva Key no. 19.  From 1946 to 1952 there were only 3 series of cases ordered, 80 in yellow and 80 in rose (pink).  Only 8 have been identified to the market of each metal color.
